Chapter One: A History & Band Roster

Today's 19th Century Brass Band

T

he Frontier Brigade Band, also performing as The 1859 Marine Band, celebrates the Mid-Nineteenth Century American Brass Band Movement by dressing in uniforms of the period, and playing the authentic surviving musical arrangements of the time. Founded in 2000, the non-profit organization is comprised of over 20 musicians from the Fort Worth, Texas area.

The band performs with Over-The-Shoulder (OTS) Saxhorns as played by 1860's circa brass bands. The OTS Saxhorns (Adolphe Sax, inventor), also called "Back'ard Blasters", had bells facing behind the player so that the soldiers marching behind the band could hear the music. The band's drummers play reproduction Rope Tension Drums.
